The thorough counting of all the entrepreneurial units that are there in the country, doing any economic activity, is it of the agricultural or non-agricultural sector, involved in the production or the Indian economic census does the distribution of goods and services.

The Government of India launched the Economic Census and Surveys Scheme in the year 1976.

The economic census takes place once every five years. The first economic census was held in all the States and Union Territories, in the year 1977, by the Central Statistical Organization (CSO) along with the Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DES).
