Overview

The thorough counting of all the entrepreneurial units that are there in the country, doing any economic activity, is it of the agricultural or non-agricultural sector, involved in the production or the Indian economic census does the distribution of goods and services. 

The information of working and other features like the number of establishments, the number of people employed, the source of finance, the type of ownership, etc. which is used for the micro-level planning and to check the share of the several sectors of our economy in the GDP, is given by the economic census of India.

The Government of India launched the Economic Census and Surveys Scheme in the year 1976.

The economic census takes place once every five years. The first economic census was held in all the States and Union Territories, in the year 1977, by the Central Statistical Organization (CSO) along with the Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DES).

  • The First Economic Census was conducted in the year 1977.
  • The Second Economic Census was conducted in the year 1980.

  • The Fourth Economic Census was conducted in the year 1998.
  • The Fifth Economic Census was conducted in the year 2005.
  • The Sixth Economic Census was conducted in the year 2013.
  • The Seventh Economic Census was conducted in the year 2019.

Entrepreneurial data for planning and enhancement of the states, specifically for the unorganized sectors of the economy, is provided by the Economic Census. The scheme is funded by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, Government of India.
