Overview

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) also known as Young Scientist Incentive Plan is a national program that is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, The Government Of India, for scholarships in the field of science, to attract intellectual students to opt for the introductory science courses and further make a career in the field of science. This project started in 1999, and the Indian Institute of Science manages it.

To top it all, KVPY students also enjoy summer camps, that are organized for them, in very high-scale research and educational institutions in India.

The everyday and academic aspects of the KVPY program are looked after by a core committee.

Eligibility Criteria

  • To be eligible for the fellowship and the admissions in institutes such as IISc and IISER, the students have to qualify in the KVPY examinations.
  • The Exam Has three streams. 
  • SA (Class-11)
  • SX (Class-12)
  • SB (First Year BSc)
  • The basic science subjects that are there are B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
  •  To receive a fellowship, the marks of the aptitude test(75%) and the interview (25%) are taken into consideration.

Selection Procedure

Aptitude Test

For the various streams, candidates who will be suitable and hence will meet the eligibility criteria will be further called for an aptitude test which will be conducted in both Hindi and English, all across the country.

Admit Card

Then, The Admit Card Is to be downloaded by the students, from the website.

Interview

Students who pass the Aptitude test are further asked to appear for an interview, which is the last step of the whole selection procedure.

Fellowships

Stream SA

During the academic year 2019-20, the students who are enrolled in Class 11, in science subjects and have also gotten a minimum of 75%(65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in Mathematics and Science, combined in the 10th standard Board Examinations in the previous year, are eligible to appear for Aptitude Test.

Once the students are selected under Stream SA, their fellowship gets activated with the condition that they have to join the undergraduate course in Sciences such as B.Sc. , B.S., B.Stat. , B.Math. , Int. M.Sc. , Int. M.S., in the academic year 2021-22 after they get a minimum of 60% (For SC/ST/PWD, it is 50%) marks in all the science subjects of Class 12 board examinations.

The students get an invite for the National Science (Vijyoshi) Camp during one year, and all of their travelling and local hospitality expenses are taken care of, by KVPY.

Stream SX

During the academic year 2019-20, the students of class 12, who are aspiring to join undergraduate program in Basic sciences such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology which further lead them to take courses such as B.Sc. , B.S., B.Stat. , B.Math. , Int. M.Sc. , Int. M.S. for the session 2020-21 with the condition that they have secured a minimum of 75%(65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in the subjects, mathematics, and science, combined (Physics/Chemistry/ Biology) in the 10th class Board Examination during the academic year 2017-18 can appear for the Aptitude test.

Once the students are selected under Stream SX, their fellowship gets activated with the condition that they join an undergraduate course in Basic Science in the academic year 2020-21 after they get a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in mathematics and Science, Combined(Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class 12 Board Examination during the academic year 2019-20.

The students who are in their 2nd year in Cambridge International Examination Board and are wanting to join an undergraduate program in Basic Sciences such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology in the year 2019-20 can apply with the condition that they have gotten a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in mathematics and science subjects, combined(Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class 10 Board Examination. 

They must have a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in mathematics and science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class 12 Board Examination before they proceed with the fellowship if they've achieved it.

Stream SB

The students of 1st year of the undergraduate program in Basic Sciences, such as Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics and Biology who are further going to proceed with B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S., during the academic year 2019-20 and who have gotten a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks combined in mathematics and science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class 12 Board Examination can appear for the Aptitude test. 

In the final examinations of 1st year B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S., the students must get a minimum of 60%(50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks before they take up the fellowship if it's given to them.

Rewards

  • Once the students clear their KVPY examination, they are eligible for the fellowship.
  • From the first year of their graduation, the students receive the fellowship.
  • From first year to third year the students of B.Sc/ B.Stat/ B.S./ B.Maths/ Integrated M.S./M.Sc, the of KVPY fellows, get rupees 5000 monthly fellowships along with an annual contingency grant of rupees 20,000.
  • Once the period of 3 years is over, the fellowship gets raised to Rs. 7000 per month during the M.Sc/4th and 5th year of Integrated M.S./M.Sc along with an annual contingency grant of rupees 28,000.
  • This examination plays a role of entrance exam for various premium and exclusive science institutes in India like IISc and IISER.

Summer Program

For the renewal of the Fellowship, it is mandatory to participate and then to achieve satisfactory performance in the summer program each year, second year onwards, (B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat /Integrated M.Sc./Integrated M.S.) in any academic Institution of National or International repute or a DSIR approved research labs.

For the renewal purposes from the second year of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat /Integrated M.Sc./Integrated M.S. program, 

 A report on the summer program along with the assessment report from the mentor is required to be forwarded along with the course performance certificate etc. 

Other Privileges

An identity card is issued to each KVPY fellow, to allow them to have access to National Laboratories or Universities, who have agreed to give outstanding facilities and privileges like Library, Laboratory facilities, etc. to the Fellows on the production of their ID card.

An initiative of Empowerment in the KVPY Fellowship Program exclusively for the students belonging to SC/ST category, a certain number of additional fellowships in several streams that are discussed above will be provided.

Exclusively for the students belonging to the Persons With Disability (Physically and visually challenged) category, a certain number of fellowships in the streams discussed above will also be provided.
